Even though they now officially qualify as “old news” on the Internet, business owners and web designers simply refuse to stop talking about (and obsessing over) the last round of Google algorithm changes. Granted, the “Penguin” and “Panda” updates had far-reaching effects, but why is it that they are still hot topics?
There are probably two big reasons. First, many of these companies have done things they shouldn’t to try to get an edge, and now that they are being ignored by Google, they’re looking for ways to re-position themselves amongst the top of the search engine rankings again. And secondly, the effects of Penguin and Panda are still being felt, as the algorithm is fine-tuned month after month.
But, that doesn’t mean that you should pay very much attention. If your business website (and accompanying search engine optimization plan) are put together in a way that appeals to common sense, then you probably aren’t likely to be affected at all. If anything, you’ll benefit from Google’s de-emphasis on sites with too much optimization.
Google algorithm changes might continue to be ongoing news, but that doesn’t mean they should always be on your mind. Just keep at your marketing plan, and you won’t have to worry about the next animal-themed update to come along.
