Have you ever walked up to your refrigerator in the middle of the night, spotted something you might enjoy putting into your stomach, and then wondered at the last moment whether it was still safe to eat or drink?
Most of us, when confronted with that situation, will give the item a quick sniff. Usually, this “smell test” is all it takes to make the necessary decision, and it’s one that we don’t spend much time thinking about.
As the days keep getting shorter and the year draws towards a close, it’s a good idea to do the same thing with your business website. That is, you want to give it a “smell test” to see whether the copywriting, photos, logos, and other details are still as fresh as they need to be to attract new customers and even search engine traffic.
This isn’t a scientific process, of course, but you might notice that you have dates and keywords that are no longer applicable, or staff bios and product prices that are out of date. Ideally, you’d go through this kind of check once a month or so, but given that many business owners and executives are busy enough as it is, the end of the year can be the best time – or the only time – to give it significant thought.
