As we like to remind new clients (and occasionally ourselves), most of the things that you do in online marketing aren’t all that difficult, but just take a little bit of effort and persistence. There is one thing that business web designers and their clients regularly struggle with, though: challenging or replacing a great idea.
There are a lot of reasons for this. In some cases, it could be that the concept or promotion in question has been working for a long time, and there is a fear of “fixing what isn’t broken.” In other cases, something just seems so obvious, powerful, or innovative that tampering with it doesn’t seem to make much sense.
The reality in each case, however, is that we have to sometimes take away good ideas and methods if we are going to replace them with great ones, or to challenge our own best ideas to see if we can top them. For that reason, we always have to be growing and testing, and can never assume that whatever idea or method we are currently using is “the best it’s ever going to get.”
Learn to find the value in what you have, but don’t ever stop looking for something better, either. That’s one of the hardest things to do in online marketing, but also one of the most important.
