First Apple iPad Commercial
The first TV ad for the Apple iPad aired during the Oscars last night.
A lot has been publicized about the soon-to-be-released Apple iPad. This device will create a whole new category for books and magazines. Wired Magazine has developed a digital version of their magazine to take advantage of the iPad platform.
We have gone from mass media to one-on-one marketing. And it only took 60 years. In the 1950s, mass media such as television dominated the advertising scene. If product companies wanted to reach large audiences, they had to create commercials for TV and place them on popular shows. The I Love Lucy show, for example, reached a mass TV audience that has never been equaled since. In 1952, there were over 17 million televisions sets in US homes and I Love Lucy had an audience of 45 million viewers. Almost everyone who had a television set was watching I Love Lucy every week.

There were over 1 billion downloads of applications for the iPhone this week. iPhone ‘apps’, are the wildly successful extensions of the Apple mobile phone platform. Through iTunes, users can download free and low cost apps for business, entertainment and many other purposes. One of my favorite apps is UrbanSpoon. UrbanSpoon allows you to find restaurants through a slot machine device that displays location, type and price. It’s a great way to find new places to eat. iPhone apps are changing the landscape of mobile marketing.
‘Live long and prosper!’ The Star Trek franchise which is over 40 years old, has done just that. I remember the classic TV show from the 60s. Much like the cowboy shows at the time, Star Trek had action, adventure and intrigue. However, the show had a captain instead of a sheriff. Captain Kirk, along with Spock, Bones, Scotty and Sulu, traversed the cosmos in search of new worlds to explore. The show was canceled eventually, but science fiction fans kept the brand alive through fan clubs and conventions.
I actually attended a Star Trek convention, for the most part to see if it was like an old SNL skit staring with William Shatner. It was. Although I must admit that I almost bought a Communicator (with authentic sound!) and a Klingon dictionary.
The new prequel movie will reintroduce the Star Trek brand to movie-goers. Heck, the kids that probably will attend are younger than a Tribble. The actors are also young and the action will be 3G enhanced. From the trailer it looks like The Fast and Furious in space. With the new Star Trek movie, the torch is being passed to a new generation. And I will boldly go to the new movie with my son.
